In 2014, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the University of Minnesota a $600,000 start-up grant to develop the conceptual and programmatic foundations for a Consortium for the Study of the Premodern World. The consortium creates a new confederation of the many extant premodern studies constituencies at the University of Minnesota, and establishes a synergistic mission to promote integrated, multidisciplinary research and teaching in global premodern studies. The consortium seeks to pioneer a new approach to graduate education by working to combine graduate training in established humanities and social sciences disciplines with an integrated, multidisciplinary graduate program in Global Premodern Studies. A second Mellon grant of $900,000 has been awarded to the University of Minnesota to support phase two of the CSPW, 2017-2021. Full Spectrum: Global Color Histories is generously funded by the CSPW.
